The Mystery of Grace- by Charles de Lint

It was worth giving this unusual fiction/urban fantasy/sci fi book a chance! Recommended by a most trusted source, the work really did exceed expectations, and forced me to stretch my restricted preferred literary genres. The main character, Grace, a young female auto mechanic, presents a mysterious, yet honest and appealing persona. If you like any of the following, this book should grab you: the southwest, classic cars, hot rods, tattoos, 50’s & 60’s surf guitar music, Hispanic family ties, stark urban reality, ghosts, the afterlife, and a relatively tasteful love story. Even if you don’t think you’ll like some of those topics, it still could be a good read for you. The themes of attachment, honesty, bravery, loss and fulfillment carry through and make for a scintillating story. I will be checking other works by this author!

Bird, Butterfly, Eel- by James Prosek

This children’s picture book surprised me by providing an outstanding explanation of the natural history of the barn swallow, monarch butterfly and American eel. The author also illustrated the book with lovely light-filled paintings. These appealing pictures add much life and interest to the informative material presented. Graphics and maps detail the impressive migration routes of the three unrelated species.

Children ages 6 through 10 (Grades 1-5) would benefit from reading this book, and all ages through adults could learn much from the natural history pages. A pleasant, relaxing read!
